“All at once called me at Elton John ”
Appears today the third album by Brandi Carlile. In an interview, the U.S. musician from working with her idol Elton John, and why it does not interest them tells how many albums they sold.
Your new album is called "Give Up The Ghost." What is the story behind the title?
It is a phrase often die for "used" is. Many people still believe that dying is only a transition. Thus, "to give up the ghost" also means to undergo a big change. We found appropriate for the title.
For the song "Before It Breaks" They should have spent nine hours in the studio at the piano.
(laughs) Yes, exactly. The song has a certain rhythm. I knew how it must sound, but I could not explain to anyone
what he has to play him. I own it very long it would take me was clear. I'm finally not the best piano player in the world. But in the end it was perfect. I love the song. He is one of my favorites of the entire album.
What other songs you like most?
I love "Caroline," because I was able to work with Elton John.
How did that happen?
He called me again and thanked me for something I said about him to the New York Times. That blew me away! But I'd never dreamed that he would say yes, play on my new album. I called him and asked simply. And he said yes.
Her last album, "The Story" was published in the U.S. two years ago. Since you are playing live for many of your songs, which they publish on the plate. Whoever buys the record yet? Good point, but it does not bother me. I believe that music has its own life. And our music alive by the fact that we play live.
It does not interest you, how many albums you sell?
Of course it interests me on some level. Ultimately, however, I know that I'm not about music. I started to an outlet for my thoughts. So if I would withhold a song and could not express my feelings, just so people will buy the album, why should I ever make music?
Your feelings are an important part of the songs. Is there a song on the new album, is the most personally?
Probably the most personal song is called "That Year". It is about a suicide of a fellow teenager, when I at the same age as he was. For me, it is difficult to hear the song and see how he is suddenly exposed to the world.
But you have not then written.
No. At that time I had a very narrow view, why someone would hurt themselves. I could not handle it. I thought he would have done to me. And then, ten years later, I wrote this song. So I forgave my friend on my way.
Such quiet songs or unplugged tracks could easily disappear in the din of the audience.
That's already happened. But that is what creates tension at a live performance: the feeling that something could go wrong. People do not want to see how we simply replay the live album. They want to see us vulnerable, and how we take risks.
